The goal of bridge bidding is NOT to bid and make your contract. The goal of bridge bidding is to achieve the highest score that you can on a hand. The highest score may be going down for fewer points than they would earn by making their contract; or the highest score may be doubling them and setting them rather than bidding your own contract.
